Dance & Movement Exploration: Leading with Grace and Grit

Most schools treat dance as a "nice-to-have" elective. A little recital at the end of the term, and that’s it. At Aspen Academy, we see it differently. Movement isn’t just about steps. It’s about how your kiddo carries themselves in the world.

Aspen Academy is one of the private schools with dance where movement is built into the school day, so confidence isn’t just an after-school add-on. If you’re comparing schools with dance because your child needs a place to feel brave in their own body, you’re absolutely in the right place.

Why Dance Matters at Aspen Academy

We’ve built a K-8 dance experience that isn’t just about flexibility or rhythm—though they’ll get plenty of both. We use movement to teach the things that actually matter: discipline, mental strength, and the guts to stand in front of a crowd and lead.

Whether your kiddo is a natural athlete or feels they have "two left feet," they’re going to gain a new kind of confidence here. We focus on whole-body learning that sticks with them long after they leave the studio.

For families searching for schools with good dance programs, the difference is simple. Dance at Aspen Academy is about becoming more yourself, not just performing like someone else. It’s the key to developing grit and artistry, whether the future leads your kiddo to the boardroom or the ballroom.

The Aspen Dance Curriculum: What Your Kiddo Will Master

Our program integrates Yoga and Pilates principles to build a foundation of physical and mental awareness. Your human will explore:

  • Mental Grit: Using breath and focus to stay composed under pressure.
  • Creative Freedom: Learning to express their own individual artistry and story.
  • Collaborative Leadership: Working with a team to move from a blank floor to a finished performance.
  • Body Awareness: Developing the posture, coordination, and stamina of a leader.

This school dance program is designed to meet kids where they are. From there, they can build up the courage to take risks and take up space in the world.

World-Class Instruction: Meet Maya Pingle

Our lead instructor, Maya Pingle, brings 30 years of professional experience, including her time as a Radio City Rockette and training at the Joffrey Ballet School. She understands that the stage is a metaphor for life. She coaches our kiddos to find their own "greatness" through movement, ensuring they grow into humans who are as comfortable in their own skin as they are in a boardroom.

Dance at Aspen: How It Fits Into the School Week

If you’re looking at schools with dance programs, it helps to know how dance actually shows up in a student’s schedule. At Aspen, every student takes dance. Movement is a core component of our Essentials Program for grades K–8 and a highly sought-after elective for grades 5–8.

In Essentials, students experience Dance & Movement in focused rotations across the year, typically in 40-minute classes during a dedicated multi-week block. That ensures every grade builds confidence and body awareness through movement during the academic year.
