In most schools, technology is either marginally existent; viewed as an “other subject” or the domain of the “tech teacher.” In education, if we look at technology as “a special class to visit,” then we’ll have missed the boat. At Aspen Academy, 75% of a student’s units of study will integrate technology in teaching, learning and student product.

Each Aspen Academy teacher specializes in a specific domain area. These assignments promote instructional specialization as early as Kindergarten, allowing each teacher to develop expertise in their domain and focus on developing each child.

Developing individuals who know their gifts, strengths, passions and can articulate and execute on those is paramount in an economy that is moving rapidly away from an institutional mindset. Higher levels of thinking and learning require ownership thinking and habits. Education needs to include a strong emphasis on project-based learning which is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge. In virtually every core and essentials domain students ownership of learning and discovering is promoted through the engagement of this methodology.

Taking inspiration from innovative, collaborative and flexible working spaces in the adult world, we’ve designed classroom spaces to promote next generation skills in students. We developed and patented the Move and Discover (MODI) furniture line that confirms in practical terms what science has taught us. Humans focus, learn and retain more when they can access their natural cadence for physical movement. Our commitment to shift learning from a sit and get proposition to a move and discover experience has produced a chair that is currently under review for both a functional and design patent as well as a first of its kind flexible standing desk. Our students regularly take on roles as mentors, senators, elected officials, and managers, comprising the youngest board of directors and c-suite executives in the U.S. They participate in hundreds of projects designed by our teachers and coaches to provide real-world experience that is applicable to their future lives and careers.
