Philosophy

At Aspen Academy, we prepare students to lead in a diverse, interconnected, and ever-changing world.

Our mission is to edify and inspire students, parents, and educators to grow, learn, and lead. Our academic programs, LiFE program, and commitment to Community Strength & Service develop culturally competent leaders with the durable skills necessary for a positive and productive life.

We define cultural competency as the ability to understand and appreciate different cultures, experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds—and to interact effectively and respectfully with people who may think, believe, live, or experience the world differently.

This is an essential leadership skill.

Great leaders are curious. They listen. They seek to understand before judging. They can engage thoughtfully with different perspectives, disagree respectfully, find common ground, and work effectively with others.

We do not believe good education requires everyone to think alike. We believe it prepares students to think critically, listen carefully, communicate respectfully, and lead effectively.

We seek to build a community in which every individual is treated with dignity and respect; differences are approached with curiosity rather than judgment; multiple perspectives strengthen learning; and every member of our community understands both the opportunity and responsibility of belonging to something larger than themselves.

LiFE, Leadership & Cultural Competency

Cultural competency is embedded within Aspen Academy's LiFE program: Leadership, Finance, and Entrepreneurship.

Leadership requires the ability to understand yourself and lead others. Students learn to communicate across differences, consider multiple perspectives, navigate disagreement, develop empathy, exercise sound judgment, and build productive relationships.

Through Community Strength & Service, students also learn that leadership carries responsibility. We expect our students to contribute—to their classrooms, their school, their communities, and ultimately the world beyond Aspen Academy.

Policy

Our commitment to cultural competency, dignity, respect, and strong community is reflected in how we teach, lead, and operate. Aspen Academy will:

  • Provide a Respectful Learning Environment. Maintain an environment in which individuals are treated with dignity and respect and that is free from discrimination, harassment, and hateful language.
  • Teach Multiple Perspectives. Provide students with developmentally appropriate opportunities to encounter different cultures, histories, ideas, experiences, and perspectives as part of a rigorous and well-rounded education.
  • Develop Thoughtful Citizens. Equip students with the knowledge, critical-thinking skills, character, and judgment necessary to become positive and productive citizens of their communities and the world.
  • Create Opportunities for Civic Engagement. Provide opportunities for students to learn about and engage with civic institutions, community organizations, and leaders at the local, state, and national levels.
  • Build a Strong Community. Welcome students, families, faculty, and staff from a broad range of backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and beliefs and create opportunities for meaningful connection, contribution, and service.
  • Prepare Students to Lead Across Differences. Teach students to listen, ask thoughtful questions, disagree respectfully, seek understanding, find common ground, and work productively with others.

Our Commitment

Aspen Academy exists to develop competent and confident leaders of themselves and others.

Cultural competency is not about telling students what to think. It is about developing their capacity to think critically, understand others, communicate effectively, serve meaningfully, and lead well.

That is good education.
That is good citizenship.
And that is essential preparation for leadership.
