Aspen Academy fifth through eighth graders grow to love the beauty of mathematics that comes from an inherent sense of how easily they can develop mathematical intuition. Students are taught to look for mathematics everywhere. For example, in athletics classes, items like force, motion and angles are discussed. Singapore Mathematics has produced the highest-performing math students globally. In seventh and eighth grade, students are transitioned to high school level mathematics in algebra and geometry to allow for honors or advanced placement opportunity once the student enters high school.

In addition to our foundational curriculum, Aspen Academy is preparing each and every child to be competent in the realm of financial literacy, self-management and self-sufficiency as well as to be able to understand and manage personal and business finances.

## 7th Grade - American Pre-Algebra

Solid preparation for algebra, geometry, integers and algebraic concepts is introduced in Chapter 1 to develop students' algebraic thinking skills. Throughout the text, algebraic concepts are connected to arithmetic skills to build on what students know. When appropriate, geometry concepts are integrated to foster connections. We place an emphasis on mastery of basic skills; the text provides numerous opportunities to assess basic skills along with abundant remediation and intervention activities. Daily spiral review provides practice on prerequisite skills, and an in-text skills handbook offers instruction for all basic skills.

## 8th Grade - Algebra 1

Basic concepts and properties of algebra are introduced early on to prepare students for equation solving. The basic algebra planning guide assures that even the at-risk student can acquire course content. There are multiple representations of concepts that are focused on developing algebra skills. Concepts and skills are introduced algebraically, graphically, numerically and verbally - often in the same lesson to help students make the connection and to address diverse learning styles. Key algebraic concepts are introduced early, and opportunities to develop conceptual understanding appear throughout the text and in activity labs. Frequent and varied skill practice ensures student proficiency and success.

## 8th Grade - Geometry

Multiple formats are supported through mastery, including two-column, flow and indirect proofs. Students learn to value the need to think logically and present ideas in a logical order. Each unit allows for solid coverage of both structure and applications. Traditional geometry concepts and logical reasoning are emphasized throughout, while measurement and applications are integrated to motivate students via real-world connections. Algebra 1 skills are reviewed at point-of-use, ensuring students maintain these skills. Algebra integration is coordinated with geometry topics, plus probability and statistics connections, are found throughout the material.
