The Student Inclusion Leadership Club (SILC) is celebrating a milestone year at Aspen Academy. In its sixth year of existence, SILC has welcomed the largest number of participants in its history, with 20 students currently enrolled in this dynamic and purpose-driven leadership experience. At its core, SILC is grounded in the belief that every person carries a unique identity that contributes meaningfully to our community. That conviction fuels the weekly meetings, daily connections, and ongoing leadership development that define the club’s work. Inclusion is not simply discussed—it is practiced, modeled, and lived out in ways that strengthen our entire Aspen Academy community.

Each year, SILC engages in thoughtfully designed service-learning experiences that broaden students’ understanding of the world and deepen their sense of empathy. Earlier this year, students explored the far-reaching and complex challenges of homelessness throughout the greater Denver area and across the United States. Through research, discussion, and reflection, students gained a deeper understanding of how systemic issues affect individuals and families. Moved by what they learned, SILC members organized a collection effort during the holiday season, gathering essential items and thoughtful gifts to support Urban Peak homeless shelter for youth and its community members experiencing housing insecurity during the colder months. Their response reflected both compassion and action—hallmarks of student leadership at Aspen Academy.

That spirit of service continued during the weekend of February 22, when 15 of the 20 SILC students volunteered three hours of their time on Sunday, February 22, to support more than 700 athletes participating in a local Special Olympics basketball event. The day was filled with skills development sessions, tournament-style games, and meaningful relationship-building between athletes, volunteers, and families. Aspen Academy students and parents facilitated connections throughout the event, offering encouragement, celebration, and joyful presence. The energy in the gym was electric, and the smiles shared throughout the day were unforgettable.

Experiences like these remind us what it truly means to be part of something larger than ourselves. The investment of time, care, and love from our Aspen Academy students and families is immeasurable. While our students gained invaluable lessons in empathy, leadership, and service, the positive emotional and social impact they witnessed—especially in the joy of the athletes they supported—was profound. SILC continues to show that leadership rooted in inclusion transforms not only those being served but also those doing the serving.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the students, families, and community partners who made these experiences possible. SILC embodies Aspen Academy’s commitment to being kind, doing good, working hard, and making the world a better place. As this record-setting year continues, we are inspired by the leadership of our students and excited for the many ways they will continue to strengthen and uplift our community.
