We are so looking forward to Spirit Week next week and all the upcoming holidays celebrated within our community, and we would like to formally wish all a happy holiday season – acknowledging a Happy Hanukkah, the November celebration of Diwali, a Happy Kwanzaa, and a Merry Christmas. We have loved seeing the recognition and honoring of various cultural traditions acknowledged and integrated into academic lessons, games, reading, and guest speakers.

We have had continued questions regarding classroom holiday parties. Our pre-COVID calendar was to celebrate classroom parties twice annually at Halloween and Valentine’s Day. We intend to continue that cadence of celebration once we have provided adequate time for our students to receive their second dose of the COVID vaccination.  The fun of spirit week, with daily spirit wear, mentor/mentee activities, the book fair, and service projects, will give our students the boost they need and deserve heading into the upcoming winter break. We know how important it is to provide those moments to build up our community and social relationships, particularly this time of year.

While there will not be scheduled holiday parties occurring, it is common for teachers to do academically integrated activities this time of year that may require volunteers. You will hear from your child’s teacher in the case that volunteers are needed to support the fun.

We thank you so much for your partnership, collaboration and we wish you a very happy holiday season, in whatever form you celebrate.

In Kindness,

Aspen Academy Academic Directors

Corey Sampson, Middle School Director

Corey Sampson taught Social Sciences at international and private schools for 13 years prior to becoming our Director and earned his principal license from Fort Hays State University. Before teaching, he was involved with a variety of nonprofits working on social and political issues. He loves Aspen because of the community: the families, the students, and the teachers here make this school unlike any other school he has worked at.

Corey loves to travel with his wife and experience the world. He has been to 6 continents and has lived and worked in 4 of them. If anyone has a trip planned to Antarctica, let him know.
