Elementary & Middle School Students Finding Continued Joy in Reading: A Recap of Aspen Academy’s Family Literacy Night

As one of the best independent schools in Denver, we evaluate our Communication and Literacy curriculum every five years, which allows us to find the most hands-on, interactive, and applicable materials possible for the continued success of our students. Part of that evaluation is also creating engaging opportunities for our families related to academic subjects. Our Communication and Literacy team created a Family Literacy Night supporting the continued learning of students -- and parents -- while making reading and literature even more fun and interactive for our learners.

Literacy Night encouraged our students to take ownership and lead themselves (and their parents) through activities and collect stamps to show their progress through the different “stations”. Students designed their own bookmarks, participated in book exchanges, and created their own game of Mad Libs. Other activities offered at Literacy Night included read-alouds from our Communication and Literacy teachers, tents and hot chocolate for cozy reading spaces, and a photobooth to commemorate the fun afternoon. The fun started at the beginning of the day, with an all-school Pajama Day in honor of Literacy Night. Family friendly events such as these are important in establishing a culture of lifelong learning, where parents model their love of learning with their students. By allowing the students to self-guide their way through the completion of tasks, and continuing to make Communication and Literacy fun, we continue our mission to provide next-generation education, real-world application, and build community.
