Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a time to pause, reflect, and honor Dr. King’s legacy through learning, service, and acts of kindness.

Ways Families Can Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Talk Together: Read or listen to an age-appropriate story or video about Dr. King and discuss his message of kindness, courage, and standing up for what’s right.
Family Service Project: Perform a small act of service together—write thank-you notes to community helpers, donate gently used books or coats, or help a neighbor.
Read & Reflect: Choose a short excerpt from Dr. King’s speeches (such as “I Have a Dream”) and talk about what fairness, respect, and justice look like in everyday life.
Acts of Kindness Challenge: Commit to a day (or week!) of intentional kindness—holding doors, including others, offering help, or using encouraging words.

Art with Purpose: Create a drawing, poster, or poem inspired by Dr. King’s dream and what “making the world better” means to your family.
Learn About Change-Makers: Explore other leaders who worked for justice and equality and discuss how kids can make a difference, too.
Serve Locally: Look for a local service opportunity as a family—food banks, park clean-ups, or donation drives are great ways to honor Dr. King’s legacy of service.
Reflect on Values: Talk about how Aspen’s core values—Be Kind, Do Good, Work Hard, Make the World Better—connect to Dr. King’s life and work.

  • Community Option – Denver Marade: Families who wish to participate may attend the Denver Marade on Monday, January 19 (MLK Jr. Day). The opening ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Marade walk at 11:45 a.m., starting at City Park (MLK Jr. Statue) and ending at Lincoln Veterans Memorial Park.
