4 Tips for a Successful Private School Tour for Your Child

Choosing a school is the most important work a parent will ever do. It’s about more than just finding a classroom; it’s about finding a second home—a community that is truly invested in your family.

At Aspen Academy, we skip the glossy brochures and superficial marketing. We want you to see the substance. Whether you are looking at early childhood or middle school tours, the goal is to see if our highest ideals for leadership and education match your own.

Here is how to make the most of your visit when you schedule a private school tour.

Preparation: What to Expect

When you arrive for private school tours at Aspen, you aren’t just looking at facilities. You’re looking for the foundation of a child's future being built. You’ll see our LiFE (Leadership, Finance, Entrepreneurship) program in action and witness how we develop humans of consequence.

A common concern for parents is what to wear to a private school tour. At Aspen, we value substance over flash. You don't need to overthink it—business casual or "smart casual" is perfect. We want you to be comfortable enough to walk the campus and we care about the thoughtful questions you ask because you have the best interest of your child in mind.

Engaging Your Child

For families considering our older grades, middle school student tours are a vital part of the process. This is the stage where a kiddo begins to take ownership of their journey. We encourage students to be protagonists in their own education, so let them be part of the conversation.

Knowing the right questions to ask when touring a private school can change the entire experience. Don’t just ask about the curriculum; ask about the culture. Ask how the school handles failure, how leadership is lived (not just taught), and how the school partners with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are kids who go to private school more successful?

Success isn't just a resume; it's character. While Aspen students perform, on average, 40% higher than national norms in math and reading, we define success by a student's ability to lead and serve. Our students graduate with the "durable skills" needed to thrive in a world that hasn't been invented yet.

What questions to ask during a private school tour?

Focus on the "Three Pillars." Ask:

  1. How do you prepare kiddos for next-generation leadership?
  2. In what ways is entrepreneurship integrated into daily life?
  3. How do you strengthen the community through service?

How to give a good school tour?

A good tour is a conversation, not a lecture. At Aspen, our tours are designed to be a "partnership." We show you the authentic, daily life of our kiddos—from the STEAM labs to our student-run enterprises—so you can feel the "Cheers" theme song vibe of our campus.

What to wear on a private school tour?

As mentioned, aim for "smart casual." Think of it as meeting a partner for a meaningful project. Neat, respectful, and comfortable is the gold standard.

What do private schools look for in parents?

We aren't looking for a "perfect" family; we are looking for a partnership. We look for parents who believe that values are not just words on a wall, but things to be lived. We want families who are as committed to raising a good human as we are.
