Service Learning:  The application of academic knowledge in the context of community service.

"There is the 'common good;' service does matter, and each person can and should make a difference!"
-Kristina Scala, Head of School

Service Learning

Aspen Academy is a Service Learning school.

Learning through service is hardly a new concept.  It is an ancient and revered principle of human experience reflected in the teachings of religions and cultures throughout the world.  Service learning expands the classroom outward so the community itself becomes the classroom.  Service learning begins within the school, goes out from it, and returns to it for connections to the basics of meeting academic standards and fulfilling educational purposes.  Students learn to become active, productive citizens.  Compared to their peers, students participating in service learning are more:  aware of community needs; committed to the idea of service; cognizant of political issues; capable of effective social change; and perform better on achievement tests than their peers.

Filling the Mayflower

Aspen Academy strives to ensure that children are involved in their community as well as their education. On November 13th, 2008, Aspen Academy students are striving to fill a Mayflower truck as part of giving to others. Students are bringing in 1 non-perishable food item for each pound that they weigh.
