Foreign Languages

Foreign language at Aspen Academy fosters a love of learning as students acquire a second (or third) language much as they do their first. Using the TPRS (Total Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) method, students acquire a broad conversational base of the language. Students act in stories to demonstrate understanding while expressing themselves physically.

Students participate by being actively engaged during lessons. They use physical responses to indicate understanding at first and later they advance to verbal responses in the target (or second) language. Each student may earn participation points during class while showing their knowledge.

Students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade will understand/recognize common/colloquial expressions in listening context. Beyond that students will be able to communicate on a basic conversational level.

Students in 3rd and 4th grade will move beyond the verbal and listening context to reading comprehension and basic writing skills.

Students in 5th through 8th grade will gain a deeper understanding of Spanish grammar and structure.
